I have sorted my photographs into two sections - sun and moon. This has allowed me to understand the contrast and what each of these mean to me. Initially, I assumed the bright photographs would go in the sun category and the dark ones in the moon but there have been a few outliers. One of these is a bright blue sky with the moon placed at the top under pink clouds. Expanding beyond my first impressions of what sun and moon could mean has opened up my photography.
My most recent nature themed project has allowed me to explore motifs of fantasy and childhood. As a queer photographer, I’m interested in how these connect to how people experience gender and attraction.
I chose to mix darker, more eerie imagery in the photos to contrast and complement the typical delicate, light-toned visuals evoked by traditional fairy tales. This allowed me to explore femininity alongside the uncanny, juxtaposing childlike notions of fantasy and creating a space to reflect on gender outside the confines of societal structures.
